McCormick Tribune Foundation Affirms Commitment to Children and Communities
Board Approves Second-Quarter Grants to 18 Agencies
CHICAGO, June 15, 2006
The McCormick Tribune Foundation board of directors continued its commitment to children and communities
by approving a total of $3.2 million to 18 agencies throughout the nation. More than $1.7 million of that
amount will go to Chicago-area organizations. Examples of these grants are outlined below.
(For a complete record of grants awarded please see attached listing).
In an effort to provide quality early care and education in Illinois, the foundation approved a $185,000
grant to support the Chicago Program Evaluation Project (C-PEP). The grant will evaluate half-day Head Start,
half-day State Pre-Kindergarten and full-day early childhood education programs in order to help Chicago Public
Schools and Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services improve all of their early childhood programs,
which together serve about 27,000 children. Specifically, C-PEP will evaluate how these programs contribute to the
healthy development and school success of children at risk of academic failure.
Aligned with the foundation’s commitment to addressing community needs, a $175,000 grant was approved for Kids
In Distress, Inc. through the communities program’s Sun-Sentinel Children’s Fund (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
The grant will fund social services—counseling, foster care, medical services, shelter and therapeutic
preschools—that help approximately 6,000 children and families dealing with abuse and neglect in south Florida.
The foundation also awarded $25,000 to the AFFNA DEA Museum Foundation, an organization aligned with the
foundation’s belief that an educated citizenry is essential to improving community life across the country.
The grant will help fund the traveling exhibit “Target America: Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause,” which
will illustrate the consequences of illegal drugs on children, communities, and the human body at Chicago’s Museum
of Science & Industry.
“The McCormick Tribune Foundation has been able to seize opportunities that support our children and communities
through partnerships with charitable agencies and some of the nation’s leading newspapers, television stations and
sports teams,” said David L. Grange, president and chief executive officer of the McCormick Tribune Foundation.
“This quarter, we have fine-tuned our grants to ensure maximum impact throughout Chicagoland and the nation.”
