CHICAGO, Aug. 22, 2005

The McCormick Tribune Foundation announced Daryl Baldemor as a recipient of its prestigious McCormick Tribune scholarship. This scholarship program, which provides substantial funding towards tuition at The Citadel, reflects the foundation’s commitment to country and was recently reestablished in honor of the foundation’s 50th anniversary.

“We are honored to support service to our country through investing in promising, young individuals,” said David L. Grange, executive vice president of the McCormick Tribune Foundation. “Our McCormick Tribune scholars will undoubtedly represent both the foundation and Illinois well during their Citadel experience.”

The 2005 McCormick Tribune scholars are:

  • Daryl Baldemor of Morton Grove, Ill. Baldemor graduated from Loyola Academy, where he participated in football, Junior War College and rowing. He will be in The Citadel class of 2009 and plans to major in criminal justice.
  • Edward Ryan Kipp of Tinley Park, Ill. Kipp graduated from Providence Catholic High School, where he served on the student council and played soccer. He will be in The Citadel class of 2009 and plans to major in criminal justice.

The scholars will each receive $5,000 per year for a maximum of four years, assuming the cadets remain in good standing. The selection of scholars, determined by The Citadel, encompassed assessments of character, need and promise in addition to academic capability.

McCormick Tribune scholarships will be awarded each fall to two incoming students from Illinois beginning in the 2005 academic year. Each subsequent year, two additional incoming cadets will receive scholarships.

The 2005 scholars are the first tapped for this honor since the program was reestablished as part of the foundation’s 50th anniversary. McCormick Tribune scholarships were originally instituted by the foundation’s benefactor, Col. Robert R. McCormick, in 1934 and further specified in his will: “To provide annually… toward tuition and expenses at The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina, for each of two deserving and needy… residents of Illinois.”

The scholarships continue the foundation’s long tradition of supporting The Citadel. The partnership between these organizations is rooted in the friendship between McCormick and Gen. Charles P. Summerall, Citadel president from 1931-1953 and McCormick’s commanding officer during World War I.

About the McCormick Tribune Foundation

The McCormick Tribune Foundation is one of the nation’s largest charitable organizations, with combined assets of close to $1.5 billion. In 2004 the foundation approved the distribution of more than $109 million to invest in communities, address human needs and promote the ideals of a democratic society through innovative partnerships. The foundation, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2005, was first established as a charitable trust upon the death of Col. Robert R. McCormick, longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune.

The foundation provides assistance in four program areas — communities, education, journalism and citizenship — and funds a special initiatives program. Through its grants, the foundation seeks to improve the social and economic environment; encourage a free and responsible discussion of issues affecting the nation; enhance the effectiveness of American education; and stimulate responsible citizenship.
